While not exhaustive, this checklist is designed to provide the first-time user with a list of tasks that illustrate some characteristics of a laptop computer. This list is NOT meant to intimidate users into selecting a desktop machine. Rather, it is meant to highlight both the benefits and limitations of a laptop computer in a range of applications, which should help potential new users decide whether this is a machine that they will be comfortable using for several years. Please examine the list below to help determine if a laptop is appropriate for your needs.
- Have you carried a laptop and all necessary peripherals (such as power cord, mouse, ...) to/from home, classroom, and/or a conference? Is the weight and bulk manageable?
- Are you comfortable using a laptop keyboard to write exams, letters, papers, and/or enter numerical information (such as grades)?
- Is laptop battery-life adequate for your intended uses?
- Is a laptop display acceptable for long-term use?
- Have you tested your strategy to backup your data to see if it appears manageable?
- Have you brought a laptop into the classroom (if you intend to)? Is this better than using the existing equipment?
- The display on this machine may not always match the display used in the classroom or available at conferences. Are you able to change the display settings so that graphics (such as PowerPoint presentations) will not look distorted in these settings?
- Network Services will NOT setup this machine for your home network (if applicable). Are you able to set this up (if desired)?
