Book Club

"Jam Sessions"

The new library book club met for the first time on Thursday, October 25, 2012 at 5:15. The thirteen attendees included students, staff, faculty, and community members and discussed the book The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield.

The attendees discussed different themes in the book and, in many cases, explained how they identified (or didn’t identify) the clues that solved the mystery in the story. Overall, the book was rated a “5” on a scale of 1 (worst book) to 5 (best book). By all accounts this was an interesting and enjoyable first meeting. Comments about the book club meeting ranged from “I loved it” to “The book club was so much fun. I can’t wait until December.”

The next meeting will be on Thursday, December 6 at 5:15pm. Samantha Lee, an English Major and library employee will be leading the discussion on J.K. Rowling’s new book, The Casual Vacancy. All are welcome and refreshments will be provided.

Amazon.com's description of The Casual Vacancy:

Release Date: September 27, 2012Book Club

"When Barry Fairbrother dies unexpectedly in his early forties, the little town of Pagford is left in shock. Pagford is, seemingly, an English idyll, with a cobbled market square and an ancient abbey, but what lies behind the pretty façade is a town at war. Rich at war with poor, teenagers at war with their parents, wives at war with their husbands, teachers at war with their pupils…. Pagford is not what it first seems. And the empty seat left by Barry on the town’s council soon becomes the catalyst for the biggest war the town has yet seen. Who will triumph in an election fraught with passion, duplicity and unexpected revelations? Blackly comic, thought-provoking and constantly surprising, The Casual Vacancy is J.K. Rowling’s first novel for adults."
