What is First Step?
First Step is Kent State University at Stark's first year advising and registration program. It's how new first year students register for fall classes.
We realize that college is an exciting and challenging time for you and your family, so we've developed First Step to help you make a smooth transition to your life as a college student.
Who Attends First Step?
First Step is required for all new first year students age 20 and under who will begin at Kent State Stark in the fall.
What is Covered During First Step?
First Step is a day-long program (9:15 a.m. - 4 p.m.) that includes:
- determining first semester course placement
- meeting with an academic advisor
- registering for Fall 2013 classes
- receiving your Kent State FLASHcard ID

a Parent Session and Financial Aid Session for parents/guardians

complimentary lunch for students and parents/guardians (maximum 2)
You must plan your day accordingly so that you can attend First Step for its entire duration. First Step is considered an excused absence for high school seniors and participation letters for Guidance Offices can be provided.
When Does First Step Take Place?
First Step is offered several times per month beginning in March. You are encouraged to choose the earliest First Step date available to get the best selection of classes.
How Do I Register for First Step?
In February, or shortly after you've been admitted, you will receive an official invitation to First Step. Follow the instructions carefully in your invitation. Before you can make a reservation for First Step, you will be required to take the online math placement assessment which will be detailed in your invitation.
